A piece created within the exhibition project "Seré tu voz, eres mi luz." For this project, Autism Sevilla has worked on a different and innovative path, bringing together artists and individuals with varying degrees of autism, where contemporary creators of different backgrounds have been able to showcase new expressive possibilities. This project aims to be the voice of people with autism, who represent the light and the driving force for many of us who believe in art.
For this work, I collaborated with José María Alonso Rebollo. José María was born and lives in Seville. He resides in Triana with his brother Carlos and his parents, Rocío and Carlos. He is a 17-year-old with a passion for sports and movies. It was special for him to discover agendas and notebooks as tools to write and describe his interests, likes, or needs. Agendas help him predict the future and know what is going to happen, becoming something fundamental for him.
When José María and I met, he lent me one of his agendas. I read it carefully, and upon analyzing its contents, I realized that he communicated with his mother through them. He shared many things, sometimes specifically explaining what happened in a movie: from the logo at the beginning to narrating the entire plot. Other times his mother wrote to him, reminding him to behave well and not hit his classmates, and he committed to doing so.
I was interested in that written dialogue between mother and son. Creating a piece where they communicated not through a notebook, but through something that spoke about that conversation. A piece of furniture; two chairs and a table, a representation of communication. I gave Rocío a child-sized chair to write on and another to José María to do the same. The table was reserved for them to converse between the two.
Installation. 2013
The piece was exhibited in 2013 at the Fundación Madariaga in Seville. And for the second time at the Expo Typomad 2013 in Matadero, Madrid, where the piece was vandalized.
